If you're running for mayor, council, or school board trustee in 2026, your whole campaign is built around a handful of fixed dates — the day nominations open, the deadline to file, and election day itself. In the three provinces Just Canvass covers most closely — Ontario, British Columbia, and Manitoba — voters all head to the polls within about two weeks of each other in October 2026.

Here's the candidate's calendar for each province, with the nomination windows, fees, and deadlines you need. Every date below is drawn from official election sources, linked in each section.

Ontario: Monday, October 26, 2026

Ontario runs its municipal elections on a fixed four-year cycle, on the fourth Monday of October. In 2026 that's Monday, October 26, 2026.

  • Nominations open: May 1, 2026.
  • Nomination Day (filing & withdrawal deadline): Friday, August 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
  • Clerk certification: by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026.
  • Filing fee: $200 for head of council (mayor); $100 for councillor or school board trustee. The fee is refunded if you file your financial statement on time.
  • Endorsement signatures: in municipalities with 4,000 or more electors, candidates must submit 25 endorsement signatures with their nomination.

British Columbia: Saturday, October 17, 2026

British Columbia holds general local elections every four years on the third Saturday of October. In 2026 that's Saturday, October 17, 2026. Voters elect mayors, councillors, school trustees, and regional district electoral area directors across the province.

  • Nomination period: September 1 to September 11, 2026 (nominations close at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11).
  • Who runs the vote: each local government administers its own election — voting, counting, and accepting nominations.
  • Campaign finance & advertising: administered province-wide by Elections BC under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act.

Manitoba: Wednesday, October 28, 2026

Manitoba holds its general municipal elections on the fourth Wednesday of October — Wednesday, October 28, 2026 — for mayors, councillors, and school trustees across the province, including Winnipeg.

  • Winnipeg nomination period: September 16 to September 22, 2026, with all papers filed in person by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22.
  • Registering a campaign (Winnipeg): councillor and school-trustee candidates can register starting June 30, 2026; mayoral candidates must register by September 22, 2026.
  • Elsewhere in Manitoba: other municipalities vote the same day but set nomination handling through their local Senior Election Official — confirm your dates locally.

A note on Alberta

Alberta isn't on the 2026 general schedule — its last general municipal election was on October 20, 2025, and the next is in 2029. That said, Alberta municipalities still hold by-elections between cycles as seats come open, and Just Canvass works just as well for a by-election, a nomination-contest push, or year-round candidate organizing. Your 2026 campaign timeline

Once you map backward from your province's dates, a municipal campaign falls into four phases:
