2026 Manitoba Municipal Election: Dates, Deadlines & a Candidate's Guide

Updated July 2026 · Manitoba

Manitoba's 2026 general municipal elections are Wednesday, October 28, 2026 — the last of the three provinces Just Canvass covers to vote this fall. Across the province, voters elect mayors, councillors, and school trustees, including in the City of Winnipeg. Manitoba's rules are set locally through each municipality's Senior Election Official, and Winnipeg — by far the biggest race — has its own registration windows and signature requirements.

Here's the Manitoba candidate's calendar, focused on Winnipeg where the rules are most specific, plus how to plan your canvassing around it.

Confirm before you file. Election day is province-wide, but nomination handling, registration windows, and signature counts are set locally — and the details below are for the City of Winnipeg. Outside Winnipeg, confirm with your municipality's Senior Election Official and Elections Manitoba. Last verified July 2026.

Election day: Wednesday, October 28, 2026

Manitoba holds its general municipal elections on the fourth Wednesday of October — October 28, 2026 — for mayors, councillors, and school trustees across the province, including Winnipeg. It's the only province of the three we cover that votes midweek.

Registration and nominations in Winnipeg

Winnipeg splits the process into two steps: registering as a candidate (which you must do before raising or spending campaign money) and later filing nomination papers during the formal nomination period.

  • Registration windows: mayoral candidates may register starting May 1, 2026; councillor and school-trustee candidates starting June 30, 2026. All candidates must be registered by the close of nominations.
  • Nomination period: September 16 to September 22, 2026, with all papers filed in person with the Senior Election Official by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22.
  • Signatures to run for mayor: a Winnipeg mayoral nomination requires 250 signatures. You can collect signatures ahead of time, but the papers themselves must be filed during the nomination period.
  • Where you file: in person at the City Clerk's Department during nomination-period hours.

Winnipeg's official 2026 election site has the candidate handbook, ward maps, and full nomination process; Elections Manitoba covers province-wide rules.

Outside Winnipeg

Every other Manitoba municipality votes on the same day, October 28, 2026, but sets its own nomination handling through its local Senior Election Official — including nomination hours, any signature requirements, and where to file. If you're running outside Winnipeg, your municipal office is the authoritative source; confirm your dates locally well before September.

Your 2026 Manitoba campaign timeline

Manitoba gives mayoral candidates an early registration date and a late-October vote, so there's a long runway to build a ground game. Mapping backward from October 28:

  • Now → spring: build the foundation. Line up your team, sharpen your message, and get to know your ward. With Just Canvass, every household is pre-loaded, so you can plan turf before you register.
  • May–June: register and start early. Register as soon as your window opens so you can fundraise and organize, begin collecting your 250 signatures if you're running for Winnipeg mayor, and start light door-knocking to build name recognition.
  • Summer → September: peak canvassing. This is the ground game — door-to-door, lawn signs, and phone, text, and email follow-up — carrying right through the September nomination period.
  • Final two weeks: get out the vote. Everything you've learned about who supports you turns into turnout, right up to the Wednesday vote. Just Canvass ties door-knocking and phone banking together so a voter reached one way is automatically crossed off for the other — no duplicate contacts on the days that matter most.
